Works Wonders' Summer of Smiles
At Foster Forward, we believe that learning never stops, even when school is out. This summer, our Works Wonders® program has been buzzing with activity, offering young people a chance to develop new skills, connect with mentors, and prepare for their future careers. Works Wonders® is designed to help youth transitioning out of foster care gain valuable work experience, build financial literacy, and explore different career paths.
This summer, our Works Wonders® classes have attracted around 25 eager participants. Many of these young people, having received a paycheck from their work experiences, found themselves quickly spending their money and running out of funds. This sparked a strong interest in financial literacy, motivating them to learn how to manage their finances more effectively. This focus has also generated excitement about our ASPIRE program, with many Works Wonders® participants signing up for ASPIRE after completing the course. Additionally, this recent cohort has helped us forge new employer partnerships in fields such as law and neonatal care, areas we had not previously explored. These new connections not only provide our participants with exciting work experiences but also open doors for future cohorts, expanding career opportunities and pathways for all.
In late June, we celebrated with a Summer Kickoff event organized by our Works Wonders® Youth Leaders. Over 50 young people, both current participants and alumni, gathered for a day of fun at a local park. With a food truck, kickball games, and plenty of laughter, the event highlighted the joy of community and the importance of having fun while learning. It was especially heartwarming to see quieter youth come out of their shells and engage more fully with their peers.
Our Youth Leaders have been shining stars this summer. Taylor, featured in our Annual Report, began her journey by earning a CNA license through Works Wonders®. Now, she mentors others with the same compassion she received. Taylor believes youth leaders have a unique impact, saying, “Having a youth leader in the classroom can really make a big impact as I can connect with participants in a unique way.”
