The Hum of the Machines: How a Simple Load of Laundry Makes a Difference
If you step into Foster Forward’s Youth Drop-in Center on any given day, you’ll almost always hear the steady drum of a washing machine tumbling clothes clean. The air carries the warm, familiar scent of dryer sheets—floral, fresh, comforting. Our machines are always running, a quiet but constant reminder of why this space exists.
It’s where young people show up in some of their toughest moments, looking for help, support, or just a place where they won’t feel alone. Many existing resources are designed for older adults, leaving young people experiencing homelessness or housing instability with few spaces that truly meet their needs. That’s why our drop-in center is so important. It’s a place designed specifically for them, where they can not only take care of the basics—washing their clothes, grabbing a meal, taking a shower—but also find support that can lead to something bigger.
A load of laundry turns into a conversation. A conversation turns into trust. And trust turns into connection—sometimes to programs that can change the course of someone’s life. The drop-in is often the first step, but it’s never the last.
Last year, thanks to support from 401Gives, we were able to add a second washer and dryer because the demand was so high. And often, that one small necessity—a working washing machine—opens the door to so much more. Unrestricted funding like what we receive from 401Gives is critical—it helps keep spaces like our drop-in center open, running, and stocked with the little things that make a big difference.
In the coming weeks, you’ll hear more about how you can be part of 401Gives this year. But for now, just know that every cycle of those machines, every folded hoodie, every warm meal served is proof of what’s possible when a community comes together to support young people in need.
And we can’t wait to do it again.
Stay tuned. 💚
